Katherine Irvin
Born and raised in the colorful urban scene of downtown Atlanta amongst musicians and artists, creativity has always been the way of life. While studying at GSU, I threw pots like clay was going out of style and relished volumes of art history, but I fell deeply in love with graphic art. I graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design and found rewarding success in my devotion to design, but over time felt I should be creating more. I knew I should paint.....so I did.
Through abstract painting I have discovered a freedom of expression that unfailingly kindles connection, growth, discovery and joy. Abstract expressionism and color field painting, entangled with principles of graphic design and volumes of graphic art have cleared the way for my work. My paintings invite the viewer to look into or down upon converging landscapes and dimensions while interpreting glimmers of realism, symbolism and found objects. By working spontaneously and intuitively, I've kept my paintings energetic, playful and free-spirited. The idea is to think without thinking. I put the brushes down when the joy begins to fade, knowing I'll pick them back up tomorrow.
